Unfinished Yolanda housing site causes floods in Antique town 20 days before 4th anniversary

Rehab czar not seen in area since his appointment

Five barangays in Bugasong town in Antique province suffered its worst flood this year because of an unfinished Yolanda relocation site complained residents during a fact-find mission conducted by the Kilusang Pagbabago.

The incident happened on October 20, 2017 or 20 days before the country marks the fourth year since the super typhoon carved a large path of destruction across the Visayas last November 8, 2013.

“Sa sinkwentay sinco anyos ko dya nga puyu sa Lacayon wara ko ka eksperyensia kang amu nga dya nga baha (In the 55 years I lived in Lacayon, I have not experienced floods until now),” said Consolacion Espino of Barangay Lacayon, Bugasong.

Tagged as the fifth and the most devastating flood this year, the waters inundated Barangays Puho, Hatay-Hatay, Calog, Lacayon and Cubay in South Bugasong.

Some 35 residents, who attended a community dialogue conducted by a Kilusang Pagbabago team headed by Fr. Jose Elmer Cajilig, KP lead convenor for Region 6, pointed at a nearby housing project by the National Housing Authority (NHA).

The project, being constructed by EDDMARI Construction and Trading, will have 1,787 units once completed. No Yolanda survivor-family has yet been relocated in Lacayon.

According to the residents, the construction firm bulldozed the hilly and forested portion of Barangay Lacayon and reclaimed four creeks. The waters from the creeks are dumped into a single tributary when it rains and causes the flooding.

On August 22, 2016, some 82 residents signed a complaint addressed to Mayor John Lloyd M. Pacete of Bugasong, Antique, a copy of which was furnished to the Presidential Action Center.

Mayor Pacete has not acted on the plea neither has he acted on a letter dated January 29, 2017 from Presidential Action Center Director Jaime Llaguno Mabilin.

During a recent statement, Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Lloyd Dino has blamed uncooperative local government units (LGUs) and members of a pro-Duterte organization.

Lacayon residents, however, said Dino has not visited the area since the presidential order designating him as President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s Yolanda housing czar.

Dino also had been accused by Yolanda survivors in Tacloban City for failing to follow up on the completion of Yolanda housing projects.

Feeling neglected and uncared for, the Lacayon villagers sought the help of Kilusang Pagbabago. Fr. Cahilig of KP Region 6 said he is bringing the concern of Lacayon residents to the attention of President Duterte through Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco Jr.

AirAsia Group CEO Launches Memoirs

Tan Sri Tony Fernandes launches Flying High autobiography at gala event

KUALA LUMPUR, 29 October 2017 - AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes today launched his memoirs, Flying High, a look back at his journey from music man to airline man.

The book was unveiled at a star-studded affair at Marini’s On 57 in Kuala Lumpur today, in the shadow of the Petronas Twin Towers.

The launch was attended by AirAsia Co-Founder and AirAsia Malaysia Executive Chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, AirAsia Malaysia Independent Director Dato’ Fam Lee Ee, AirAsia Malaysia CEO Aireen Omar, AirAsia X Malaysia CEO Benyamin Ismail, AirAsia Thailand CEO Tassapon Bijleveld, AirAsia Group CEO for Indonesia Dendy Kurniawan, and AirAsia India CEO Amar Abrol.

AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said, “Flying High is a story about the power of dreams. When I first started AirAsia with Datuk Kamarudin, everyone thought we were crazy. They said we had no business running an airline and it wouldn’t work. If we had listened to them, we would have given up before we even started and this book wouldn’t exist.

“This book is proof that dreams do come true, and I hope it will encourage others to pursue their true passion. Believe the unbelievable, dream the impossible and never take no for an answer. Even if you fail, it doesn’t matter because at least you’ve tried and you can do it again, so trust in your gut feeling, don’t listen to anyone else’s advice and go ahead - write your own incredible story.”

Flying High recounts Tan Sri Tony Fernandes’ journey from a young boy growing in Malaysia to a homesick British boarding school student with a tuck box full of dreams, all the way to his time at Warner Music and finally as AirAsia chief - with plenty of stops along memory lane in between.

Learn about what drives Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and the moments that shaped him, including a chance encounter with Virgin Group founder, Sir Richard Branson that eventually led to Fernandes’ first job out of university.

Published as Tan Sri Tony Fernandes returns as the face of the second series of Apprentice Asia, the book is an inspiring personal story of an exceptional business leader who created Asia's first budget airline and democratised air travel in Asia, building AirAsia into a multi-billion-dollar company in the process.

Retailing at RM86.95 (inclusive of GST), Flying High is available now at all major bookstores, pre-book on bigdutyfree.com and on board AirAsia flights and on bigdutyfree.com from 6 November 2017.

Globe Hailed as Advertiser of the Year

Globe Telecom’s #CreateCourage campaign to promote its partnership with the movie Rogue One: A Star Wars, won numerous awards at the recent 2017 Internet and Mobile Marketing Association of the Philippines (IMMAP) Boomerang Awards, including the coveted Advertiser of the Year award.

Launched last December 2016 as part of the telco’s multi-year strategic partnership with entertainment giant Disney, #CreateCourage advocated for non-judgmental understanding and to celebrate bravery during struggle through a short film. The campaign also bagged  old Award for Campaign: Tech and Telecommunications, Silver Award for Campaign: Leisure, Wellness and Entertainment, Silver Award for Digital Craft: Visual and Audio Excellence, Silver Award for Effectiveness: Awareness and Bronze Award for Effectiveness: Engagement.

The film tells the story of a young Star Wars fan named Alex who wears her Stormtrooper helmet every day at home, in school, or out and about, piquing the curiosity of people around her. One day, she enters her classroom and is surprised that her whole class too was wearing the same helmets, showing her support. This then leads to the heartwarming reveal of the girl’s condition when she takes off her helmet to reveal the oxygen mask.

Wonderfully demonstrating a child’s resilience and triumph over challenges, the heart-tugging video went viral in a matter of days after its release by Globe, and soon received praise from all over the world, especially from Star Wars fans. It garnered over 45 million views and has been recognized by top online news channels such as CNN International, Mashable, Huffington Post, Upworthy. It also received international acclaim with the Best Short Form award at the 2017 Brand Film Festival New York.

The campaign sought to raise awareness for the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), which needed to raise funds for the rehabilitation of its pediatric oncology clinic. Globe enlisted the support of its millions of viewers to donate to the clinic, so that the hospital could make it a warmer, more cheerful environment conducive to the children’s recovery.

“Creating societal value is important to us in any campaign that we take on. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story had very inspiring values that allowed us to come up with the story for the ad. We are honored by the recognition from IMMAP and grateful to have been given the chance to try and positively impact the real world,” said Albert de Larrazabal, Chief Commercial Officer, Globe Telecom.

The Internet and Mobile Marketing Association of the Philippines created The Boomerangs in 2008, recognizing innovation and excellence in digital marketing and advertising. This year’s awards received its highest turnout of 263 submissions.
